Showcasing the latest in automotive technologies of the time, Mitsubishi Motors began production of the Debonair, an executive saloon in 1964. Incorporating luxurious amenities, the Debonair's smooth acceleration was provided by the 1,991cc, KE64 engine, with twin carburetors and dual exhaust which developed 105ps at 5,000rpm for a top end speed of 155km/h. In the 70s, the 130ps Saturn 6 engine was adopted giving the Debonair a top speed of 180km/h.

It gathered such a strong following among top executives in Japan that it did not undergo a full model change until 1986. Throughout Debonair's long model life it came to symbolize the pinnacle of motoring luxury for top executives.

With the full model change in 1986 the Debonair adopted the FF format (front engine, front wheel drive) which offered a dramatic increase in interior space. The Debonair V with an array of new innovative features again gave new meaning to luxury, comfort and performance. The latest in engine technology was in ample evidence with the adoption of Mitsubishi's first V6 engine series offering a choice of either 2,000cc or 3,000cc versions. For increased power performance, a supercharged version of the V6 was added to the lineup the following year.

The 3rd generation of this state-of-the-art model was released in 1992. With its three box shape and flowing lines the Debonair's exterior represents a marriage of the traditional and the ultra-modern. Longer and wider than its predecessors, it provides real executive class interior room and trunk space. The top-of-the-line model is equipped with a silky smooth and whisper quiet 260ps 3.5 liter V6 engine. The Debonair as Mitsubishi's domestic flagship incorporates the very latest in active safety technology including 4-wheel steering, 4-wheel anti-lock brake system, active preview electronic control suspension, and INVECS transmission with traction control. Passive safety features begin with the strong construction of the Debonair and include front airbags for both the driver and passenger. Driver conveniences include a navigation system, automatically adjusted seat and steering to assure the desired driving position every time, motorized doors and trunk lid that latch themselves when just engaged, and many more.
