Mitsubishi Diamante

A New Class of Elegance

As a vehicle manufacturer, Mitsubishi Motors has one of the most comprehensive lineup of vehicles in the world. To further enhance this lineup the award winning Diamante was introduced in 1990. This elite new medium size saloon offered refined performance, superior comfort, high quality appointments, elegant styling and a host of safety features for both driver as well as passengers. Leather appointed seats, instrument panel with wood inserts and center console further heighten the smoothness of the ride in an airy interior environment adding to Diamante's appeal of luxury. In addition to 2WD models, the Diamante also offers models integrating Mitsubishi's Active Four System comprised of 4WD, 4WS (4-Wheel Steering), 4IS (4-wheel Independent Suspension) and 4ABS (4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System).

Mitsubishi broke new ground with how a vehicle's advanced technologies and engineering can contribute to the driver's emotional well being under various driving conditions. At the forefront of these technologies was an active safety feature, the Traction Control System, the first of its kind to be applied in the industry. This is an active trace and traction control system which is based on driver intent and the vehicle operating parameters regulating both braking and engine output to ensure the proper line through a curve and to provide the proper amount of traction under various road surface conditions.

To add luxury to the Diamante, other advanced innovative features were incorporated. MICS (Mitsubishi Intelligent Cockpit System), also a world first, automatically adjusts seats, cockpit and door mirrors as well as the angle of the steering wheel to the driver's pre-selected specifications.Mitsubishi Multi-Communications System integrates on-board navigation, audio sound control, television, cabin and personal information display to dramatically enhance on-the-road convenience and riding pleasure.

The Sigma, a sister model of the Diamante, was also introduced to markets outside of Japan. The Sigma and the Diamante shared not only a common performance base but were also very similar in design with the Sigma providing increased interior space.

In 1992 the Diamante/Sigma Station Wagon produced in Australia by Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd. was successfully introduced to various markets worldwide.

In 1995, the Diamante underwent a full model change incorporating the latest state-of-the-art technologies coupling high piston displacement with superior fuel economy. The new Diamante has the highest overall height of any saloon-type vehicles produced in Japan, yet offers a sharp, dynamic styling focusing on aerodynamics to ensure smooth quiet performance and superior high-speed stability. Stately and regal in appearance, the Diamante boasts the roomiest, most comfortable interior in its class.

The new Diamante excels when it comes to integrating the most advanced technologies available. It was the first vehicle to adopt an FF format with a 5 speed automatic transmission. The INVECS-II, 5-speed transmission with sports mode in tandem with a high performance DOHC engine assured smooth operational ease and superb running performance. The sports mode allows for manual operation of the automatic transmission when dynamic shifting is required. In 1997, the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine integrating the latest Mitsubishi engine technology was added to the lineup.

In 1996, Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd. started production on the 2nd generation Sigma and Sigma Station Wagon to offer new riding elegance to the world markets.
