TAKATA AIRBAG SAFETY RECALL
NOTIFICATION: SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN FOR PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR ON MITSUBISHI LANCER, TRITON & PAJERO MODELS
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) is committed to the safety, quality and reliability of our products. In conjunction with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation in Japan, we therefore carry out continuous quality monitoring activities to ensure the excellence of our vehicles and the safety of our customers. For this reason we are proactively recalling some vehicles which could potentially be fitted with a possibly defective SRS Airbag Inflator.
In the event of a collision, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin at high speed and seriously injure or even kill the occupants. There is also a potential risk that the airbag may underinflate when deployed and may not provide the expected level of protection for the driver or front passenger.
The driver’s airbag inflator could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurs, the performance of the propellant may be altered and it therefore may not perform as designed during an accident, causing incorrect deployment of the airbag.
MMSA has notified the last known owner, advising them of the potential issue via registered post through the authorities. However, you can also check whether your vehicle is affected and contact us to take action at [email protected] or on 011 552 6000.
Although we have not received any complaints from within the South African market, we have decided to conduct a voluntary recall campaign. This is done as a proactive measure to ensure that all the necessary precautions are taken to guarantee the quality, reliability and safety of our products. This recall underscores our commitment to address all vehicle quality and safety issues promptly and effectively.
